HBV Portfolio - 'The disappearing female gene' PDF Print E-mail

Crimes Against WomenThis is a joint-Project between the Sikh Human Rights Group (SHRG) and the MPSA.

The MPSA was approached by the SHRG who are working to influence the gender bias, deep-rooted prejudice and discrimination by Punjabi/Sikh families against unborn babies and infants of female gender.

The MPSA sponsored the SHRG to conduct research in India, to raise awareness and understanding of why the female population continues to fall at increasing rates. The research seeks to engage key Indian authorities and challenges any unwillingness to avert and address this problem.

The aim is to:

  • Reduce the number of female deaths.

  • Change the mindsets of families considering or committing foeticide/infanticide.

  • Support mothers who are forced to participate.

  • Provide better nutrition for female infants.

  • Reduce the social burden families face.

  • Influence Governmental policy. This particular project will address these issues of foeticide, infanticide and gender inequalities under the wider umbrella of violence against women. It is widely believed non-Indian residents are returning to India for easily accessible sex determination testing and abortions, despite these acts being illegal in India.

To improve human rights for the most disadvantaged people, the programme will defend the rights of the unborn baby girl through state-wide campaigning using faith-based advocacy and counselling at village level.
