Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji“We have read about the great work the Metropolitan Police Sikh Association are doing with community groups in promoting the Sikh religious teachings and would like the opportunity to work in partnership with you”.
Ranjit Kaur. Director Sikh Community Youth Services

The MPSA has forged a strong partnership with the SCYS by actively supporting and sponsoring their activities.

Sikh Community Youth Services (SCYS) is a charitable organisation that has been set up in Slough and Ealing Boroughs to serve the community through the implementation of Sikh ideology and principles of the Sikh Gurus teachings. The target audience are young children through to young adults.

The MPSA has actively engaged in the SCYS on children’s projects, some examples are:

  • Khalsa Club - This is a weekly workshop run by volunteers that include teachers from local schools. Children attend regularly to learn about Sikhism and how to develop social skills to deal with issues in the school/community and scenarios for them to implement in their lives. They arrange field trips such as visiting Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s throne in the Victoria and Albert Museum and trips to local Sikhi workshops and seminars.

  • Kaurageous - Similar workshops to Khalsa Club aimed specifically for girls to promote self awareness, self-esteem and helping them create links between religious theology and practice.

  • Football – Organise weekly 5-aside football games at local sports arenas, to promote healthy living, fitness, team building and social skills.

  • Summer camp – An annual week long daily camp organised for children aged six to sixteen plus. This week comprises of 30 – 40 volunteers and 300 children, along with the presence of Guru Granth Sahib, all on enjoyable journey learning about Sikhism through:guest lecturers, workshops, role plays, project building, creative arts, sports and competitions.

They want to expand and work with local authorities and police services on the implementation of national policing and local authority strategies at a local level to make these children aware of how their interest and involvement can have an impact on their lives.

The SCYS is excelling constantly in achieving exposure amongst the Sikh community working towards encouraging the growth of crime free and God conscious young Sikhs. Working in partnership with Sikh police officers, who are clearly promoting the Sikh Ideology, will be a positive move in breaking barriers between law enforcers and the younger generations.

The rise in crime committed by young, disengaged youths is on the rise in West London and, with the advice and guidance of the MPSA, we hope to create an effective programme to discourage the rise of so called ‘Sikh gangs’.
