Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji PDF Print E-mail

Shri Guru Granth Sahib JiIn the U.K. lies an original Shri Guru Granth Sahib: the holy scripture of the Sikhs. Expert indications reveal that it was  produced in 1894 in the then capital of Punjab, Lahore.

Unfortunately, this vitally important manuscript lies in a poor state - in need of urgent restoration. Restoration in this case requires considerable amounts of finance. Dedicated curators and conservator’s will complete this work.

In short, a description of the problem:

•     The cloth to the spine is nearly all missing.

•     The cloth to the boards is dirty with tears around the edges.

•     The joints to the front and back are completely split leaving the boards unattached to the spine.

•     Both front and back flyleaves are brittle with many tears to the edges.

•     The head/tail boards are in poor condition and semi-attached where the seam has broken.

•     The text block is in a fair state, although there are imperfections to the leaf, and potential risk of deterioration if not conserved. It is acidic, and requires dry-cleaning.

The MPSA Executive agreed to fund the restoration of our beloved Guru. There is nothing more important to a Sikh than the sanctity of his Guru.

The project will take approximately 9 months, and Palbinder Singh will personally be overseeing the restoration work. Our aim is to have Shri Guru Granth Sahib ready for the 300-year celebrations in which Guru Gobind Singh abdicated Gur-Gaddi to the Shri Guru Granth Sahib on the 6th October 1708. We shall endeavour to make a digital recording of the restoration.

Tri-centenary celebrations of Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

The MPSA Executive has for the first time celebrated and  published four dates of the Sikh calendar. Next year we will increase it to six.

•     The advent of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the spectator of all time & all existence, the founder of Sikhism.

•     The martyrdom of Guru Arjun Dev Ji by Shamanistic Law.

•     Bandi Shore divas also known as Dewali.

•     The martyrdom of Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji by Shamanistic Law.

•     The advent of Shri Guru Gobind Singh

•     Vaisakhi of Guru Gobind Singh, establishing the Order of the Khalsa.

The MPSA in recognisance of our duty, will be marking these prominent Sikh dates throughout the year.

October 2008 will mark the tri-centenary since Guru  Gobind Singh abdicated Gur-gaddi to Shri Guru Granth  Sahib on 6th October 1708. This major Sikh event will be celebrated on a national and international scale.

The MPSA will be leading in this celebration with UK Sikh leaders, and will be focusing our yearly activity on this monumental occasion. Our restoration of a historical  Guru Granth Sahib is to be completed for this function.

The event will be at the Guru Nanak VA School in Hayes  on the 23rd & 24th August 2008. More details will be  announced in due course.  If any of our members are interested in assisting in these tri-centenary celebrations, please contact the MPSA office.
