The 6th October 2008 was the tri-centenary of the abdication of Gur-gaddi from Guru Gobind Singh to the Guru Granth Sahib. This was an event that was celebrated by Sikhs internationally. It was, therefore, one of the main events and focus for the MPSA this year. After the successful restoration of the historic 1894 Lahore recension of Shri Guru Granth Sahib, we produced ten canvases of the ‘Bir’ or Holy Scriptures illustrating the various stages of the restoration works to its original glory.

We also participated in the Nagar Kirtan, or procession, which was on the 24th August 2008, at the Guru Nanak Sikh School in Hayes. Working again with our community partners, we acquired a tent from whereby everybody had access to free health checks, education and policing. Recognising this as a monumental and auspicious occasion, the MPSA funded a book to commemorate this event, detailing the uniqueness of Guru GranthSahib. “Divine Revelation” by Dr Sarbjinder Singh has been distributed across the globe free of charge. Copies are available from the MPSA office. Palbinder Singh received an award from the Gurbani Parchar Trust. As a permanent, appropriate and fitting memorial to this event, we commissioned a plaque to commemorate this occasion. This was undertaken by a professional wood carver and gilder who hand-carved the plaque in a 16th Century Indo-Persian Fresco design from the Golden Temple. It was gilded in part with gold leaf. The plaque was presented to the Guru Nanak Sikh VA School in Hayes who led on the event and Baroness Caroline Cox of Queensbury unveiled it. This plaque is now a permanent part of the school’s building.
