GLA Vaisakhi Award for Sporting hero

Mr Surjit Singh is presented with his award by Deputy Commissioner Godwin On Sunday 2nd May 2010, the Greater London Authority with its partners celebrated its eighth Vaisakhi on the Square event.

Metropolitan Police Sikh Association (MPSA) member Mr Surjit Singh who works for the NPIA PNC at Peel Centre, Hendon, was one of twelve sporting heroes recognised this year at the event. He was presented with the special GLA Vaisakhi award by Deputy Commissioner Tim Godwin and Chair of the Vaisakhi Committee, Manjit Buttar JP during the festival at Trafalgar Square this month.

Surjit a keen sportsman runs a football club at Hendon that is open to all members of the police family. He has a black belt in Karate and runs keep fit classes for the Asian elderly in the community. He also helps out at his local Gurdwaras. Currently, he works in the PNC department.

DS Gurpal Virdi, from the Met police Sikh Association said: "Surjit's dedication to sports and the Asian community has been outstanding, which has involved doing a lot of work in his own time, especially with the Asian elderly addressing important issues such as health and fitness.

"There was a lot of competition this year. He is a great role model who encourages health and fitness to all members of the police family".
